According to NACCAS' Job Demand in the Cosmetology Industry, 1999:

"In January 1999, there were 1,286,000 professionals employed in the nation's 296,563 beauty salons, barber shops, skin care salons, and nail salons. The typical salon is a small full service salon with 5 stations, 2 or 3 full-time professionals and 1 part-time professional. Salon owners report an average of 174 clients per week.

There is a great deal of mobility in the industry. One out of every three salon employees changed jobs last year, creating over 419,000 filled job openings or 1.4 openings per establishment. Considering that half of the establishments have one to three people, this is an enormous turn-over rate. Employees most often leave to work in other salon establishments (19%). Nearly 10% left to open their own establishment and 15% left to become booth renters.

The salon industry continues to be a job-seekers market. Salon owners report that they planned on filling 500,000 positions in the first six months of 1999. Approximately 3 out of every 4 salon owners who looked for new employees in 1998 reported difficulty in finding qualified personnel. Employment prospects are good for those interested in re-entering the field and for recent cosmetology program graduates. Some 43% of employees leaving their current position leave to go back to school, raise a family or work in an unrelated industry. Thus, there were approximately 180,000 positions for recent graduates and re-entrants; over 100,000 of those positions were filled in 1998 with people with less than one year of experience.

Other key findings:

bullet

70% of salon owners classified their salon as a full-service salon, 13% as a haircutting salon, 4% as a nail salon and 9% as a barber shop.

bullet

60% of salon employees work full time, 29% are part time (20-35 hours), and 11% are low time (less than 20 hours).

bullet

The average salon income, including tips, appears to be about $18.50/hour.

The Salon industry continues to be a job seekers market. This is especially exciting news for recent graduates and those individuals wanting to re-enter the field."
